History

Philosophy

At Shannon Day Care Society, we strive to provide a warm and loving environment where children feel secure and safe. The care provided by the teaching staff is the key to creating this environment. We plan activities that encourage growth through creative, sensory, cognitive and imaginative experiences.

We believe that children of all levels of ability, ethnicity and gender orientation should be able to attend an Early Childhood setting in their community with their peers. All children participate in every aspect of our program according to their level of comfort and ability. We individualize programs in coordination with supported childcare to meet the needs of each specific child’s growth and development. Being an inclusive center offers countless benefits for everyone involved.

Our programs are designed to foster self-esteem, self-confidence, and independence in youg children and they are encouraged to express their emotions and learn that their feelings are important. Children are never forced to participate in activities that cause them to feel anxious or upset. The teaching staff offers positive support that is non-threatening.

Shannon Day Care Society provides a learning environment and requires its teaching staff to complete a recognized Early Childhood Education (ECE) program as well as an Infant Toddler (IT) and Special Needs (SN) program. All teachers are provincially licensed in one or all of these programs and hold current First Aid certificates and Criminal Record checks. We regularly attend pertinent workshops to keep ourselves relevant and current.  Shannon Day Care is a teaching center and we have ECE students from local colleges do practicum placements with us from time to time.

Shannon Day Care Society's teachers are members of the BC General Employees' Union (BCGEU) and negotiate their collective agreement with the Parent Board of Directors.
